A Poem for You
you are not finished
in the long story of your life.
you are curled like a leaf
under the light of
God’s regard,
gentle eyes,
tender gaze.
you are on a hillside in the late afternoon
all the grasses bending toward you
all the Spirit’s songs reaching for you.
look up
that sky is yours
look at the blue of it
you are loved and this great expanse
offers itself to you
your words can fill it
your singing can exult there.
even after a whole notebook
of tired days, the scattered papers of years—
you are delightful and cared for and new.
will you soften into the hillside?
will you let your bones rest?
lay your heart down
and forget your attempts to wring
what you wanted out of these days
forget the ways you faltered
and flailed.
look at you now,
so beautiful among the flowers.
