The Long and the Short of it

The good news is, I finished crocheting my cowboy hat.

The bad news is, I’m going to have to tear it all apart and start over.  I didn’t use a strong enough wire, and the brim doesn’t hold it’s shape very well.  Plus, it was my first crocheted project, and I think I could do a better job.  Because if you’re going to go to the trouble of crocheting a cowboy hat, you’d better do it right, right?

The good news is, Leaf looks really cute in it, floppy brim and all. (I just finished watching this video again and realize that I am pretty much the worst videographer the world has ever known.  Not that the world knows me, of course.  I took the video vertically and in setting it the right way, managed to stretch it until Leaf looks like the shortest baby the world has ever known.  Not that the world knows him.  But he’s still cute, right?  And my mother would probably like you to know that she is moving in, we interrupted her unpacking on day 2 of moving into a new house.  That’s all.  Carry on.)

Hi Rachel!

Remember me? I was manning the nursery last Sunday at the Vineyard and ended up chatting with you for a long time. I\’ve just checked out the Journey Mama website – looked at pictures, read entries, learned 100 things about you!!! Very fun! Thank you for giving me a glimpse of who you are and what your life is like- I really enjoyed talking with you in church as well as reading your entries, and hope to bump in to you again. And if we\’re ever in California (yeah, right), it would be fun to swing by the Land. If you\’re still in town this week, and are up for it, come over for a visit!

Have a good trip back –
Tanya

Looks like a Mighty Fine cowboy hat to me, perty lady.
(That’s meant to be Wild West-ey. Well, the Aussie version anyways).
Can’t watch the vidoe as my internet is worse than terrible. Really really bad and slow. I usually get to check my email and your site before the whole thing grinds to a screaming halt and I have to take very very deep breaths and then meditate for a while.
See, even talking about it gets me stressed….. :)

that is the cutest cowboy ever! What a beautiful child, Rachel – and I can’t wait to see your crocheted cowboy hat v2.0, as this one already looks pretty good!

don’t undo that one, just make another. floppy-rimmed cowboy hats are lovely on baby boys.

seriously? how can your baby be that cute? i just watched him and fell in love totally. i had to look at my kids and remind myself that i have some and i can’t have yours. and love the cowboy hat. pattern? easy to do or time-consuming? if i must i will go with the hat if i cannot have your lil’ guy.

Yay :) A photo of your dreads. I knew you had them, but hadn’t read the archives enough to find the pics. Your dreads are what I imagine mine maturing to someday. Thanks for helping me keep the vision :) Your little one is so adorable. Little legs are the best.

Agred wtih PPs, don’t unravel it. Keep it as a super reminder of your first efforts! The kids will manage to unravel it more slowly anyhow, and that’s always more fun.

Jack (my 9 mo old) was watching Leaf babble and was talking right back to him. We refer to it as “the call of the child”. :)

Sounds like Leaf is missing Superstar Daddy; I’m sure it doesn’t make it any easier on you.

Peace to you!

I would not unravel it either…on Leaf it looks like a big floppy sun hat. I’m thinking YaYa would look adorable in it. But you must try again for the cowboy hat since it looks so cool on you in the first pic. That boy is some kinda cute in his onsie. There’s something about babies in onsies with wet drool spots on the front that are possibly the cutest thing ever. His big toothy grin is doin’ wonders for him too! Total cutie.

Oh! Oh! I did see those shiny red toenails in your clip after all! :-)

Thanks Rae! That was great! The hat looks good. I don’t think crocheting takes as much patience as knitting. It seems to go quicker. Is Leaf always so sing-songy? Ya-Ya’s drawings and your commentary on them cheered me up the other day too.

I love the hat!! And the photos were so sweet, I haven’t been bye to journey mamma’s lovely pages!

Wow how beatiful and vibrant your family is,Your children are like blossoms budding in the morning dew, so sparkly and alive.

My partner Ron is on his way to Oakland and then Badger for a week long yoga retreat and festival with my God Parents, ~ I can relate to missing that super star husband of yours…
why Turkey? sounds like you are amazing parents and nomads..

Wow Becca is so grown up! It’s been a while since I’ve seen you, I wish I could go to Oakland with Ron and visit you.. but unfortuneatley I’m tied down to my job, maybe in the fall… you can tent in california in the fall right?

keep up the crocheting you’re doing wonderful! What an accomplishment isn’t it? My Grandma taught me when I was ten, it’s a blissful meditation. To this day she sends me and the family crocheted things and she can’t walk or write because of her arthritis. I have great appreciation of the stiches:)

Peace and Love Rae!
Melissa

Those are some great cowboy legs! There is something very eccentric about a dready woman in a cowboy hat…especially a crotched one!

i miss you guys so much………..this video is just delightful

I was just wondering if you’d ever finished that hat… Good thing about the second time around is that it will go much faster. :)

Cheers!

Another vote for leave the hat alone! It’s awesome.

Leaf is adorable, hat or no hat.

Yes, the hat is cool, and the leaf baby puts on just the right swagger… but tell me more about the painting behind him! mark

Two things-
1. That picture of yourself in the hat, well it is quite possibly the coolest picture I have ever seen of you. Sincerely.
2.I am as fasinated with that video, watching it over and over again, each time finding it more and more insanely adorable as the first time I watched what about bob. I believe I rewound that movie at least 300 times in same night.
3. I miss you guys.
So I guess it was three things.

One more thing worth mentioning,
I heart how much the leafer drools
Also, I am 73 percent sure I heard him say I heart aunty lala.
Just saying is all.
